Happening now until May 19, 2020:
Lorraine O’Grady – The Strange Taxi, Stretched
O’Grady’s installation adapts two photo-montages she made in 1991, “The Strange Taxi: or From Africa to Jamaica to Boston in 200 Years” and “The Fir-Palm.” The work represents her roots in both New England and the Caribbean. In The Strange Taxi, women in O’Grady’s family are seen coming through the roof of a large New England house. This represents black women escaping from limits imposed on them in Boston after the first World War. By stretching her photo to cover the museum facade O’Grady gives them room to stretch up to the sky.
