Jamaica Plain

Jamaica Plain is one of Boston’s 23 neighborhoods. It was founded by the Puritans, who were looking for arable land. Jamaica Plain was originally part of the former town of Roxbury. It seceded from Roxbury along with West Roxbury in 1851, and became part of the City of Boston in 1874. In the 19th century, Jamaica Plain became one of the country’s first streetcar suburbs. It’s home to a large part of Boston’s Emerald Necklace park system which was the work of the brilliant landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
