Now that so many of us are cleaning out our closets and attics, here’s another idea:
If you’ve inherited fur coats, jackets, stoles or other accessories (and/or leather) you don’t wear, you can send them to PETA’s fur coat donation program.
Scott Cator, an Action Team Coordinator for PETA, explained that PETA uses fur and leather donations in several creative ways. Every year, PETA holds a few “fur kitchens” at homeless shelters around the country for people who can’t afford to buy coats. They’ve even shipped hundreds of furs to help warm the women and children in the freezing temperatures of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Because tax law prohibits PETA from determining the value of non-cash donations, they aren’t able to list a dollar amount for your gift. Scott advises that if you’d like to declare it as a donation on your taxes, talk with a tax accountant to find out if you needed to get an appraisal before you donate.
