I’ve never cooked a turkey, and since becoming a vegetarian about 98 years ago, it’s not likely to happen. Never made a pie, either.
So, you can tell that means I’ve been a guest at every Thanksgiving except when my family hosted, and then my only job was to set and decorate the table. And lock the dining room doors so the cats wouldn’t wander in and curl up on the dishes. (You’d be surprised how invisible a white cat on a white plate can be.) Now I just admire other people’s tables.
Lately two cousins – who are sisters – have alternated hosting. Every year they remind me of how many things there are to be grateful for, not just for opening their homes to us with love, but also for how they make you feel special. This year’s host called – in the middle of her kitchen renovation – to ask what she can make so I can have something good to eat too (I told her not to fuss, I’ll just eat the sides…but mac and cheese. Last year her sister made me stuffed acorn squash).
The last couple of years have been hard for a lot of people for a lot of reasons. Many people are still struggling. Knowing I have a roof over my head and food on the table – mine or someone else’s – and busy cousins who ask what they can make for me while they’re getting ready to feed a small army makes me very thankful. My wish for you is that you have people and moments in your life that make you feel the same.
Have a healthy, safe and happy Thanksgiving.
XO Brenda
