Boston’s Apollo – Thomas McKeller and John Singer Sargent

In 1916 Sargent, who built an international reputation for his society portraits, met a young African American elevator attendant named Thomas McKeller at the Hotel Vendome in Boston. Sargent made McKeller a model for the murals he painted for the Museum of Fine Arts, depicting McKeller as male and female, as white gods and goddesses.

Sargent gave his preliminary drawings of McKeller to Isabella Stewart Gardner. Now the Gardner is displaying the drawings together for the first time.

It’s a thought provoking look at race and gender, identity and relationships.
